Architect

General Description:
We are looking for an entrepreneurially minded technology expert to lead architecture and design of Desire2Learn's software solutions. Architects are technical gurus with experience working with large-scale component-based systems. It is their responsibility to manage the various aspects of the architecture, including:
- Scalability and performance
- Extensibility and maintainability
- Security
- Internationalization and accessibility
- Adoption of protocols and standards
- Deployment and configuration
They must understand the SDLC and have experience with formal project methodologies. They work with all of the departments within the company, but most closely with the development team, product management and project management.
Successful candidates will have:
- Proven experience in designing, developing, and deploying from the ground up, successful software solutions in consumer or enterprise markets
- Excellent knowledge of OOA/D, design patterns, enterprise patterns
- Strong RDBMS design, SQL and database skills
- A good understanding of the SDLC and software configuration management
- A passion for technology
- Strong organization and planning skills
- Good written and verbal communication skills

Main Duties:
- Develop the high-level architecture for consumer and/or enterprise web applications
- Review and approve technical designs (system, component, class, database, etc.)
- Provide technical guidance and advice to project teams and decision-makers
- Identify and communicate technical issues
- Provide guidance on functional design
- Provide the work breakdown and time estimates for projects
- Mentor software developers and other architects
- Meet with clients and partners as required
- Participate in standards bodies as required
Work Experience Recommendations:
- 10+ years of experience in software development
- 5+ years of experience in software architecture
- 5+ years of experience with enterprise web applications
- Experience with .NET, C#, SQL Server 2000 and 2005
- Experience in the development of commercial applications is considered an asset
Education Recommendations:
- Bachelors of computer science or a related field
- Masters or PhD in computer science is considered an asset
