Systems Architect (Ref #D2LSAR2008)

General Description:

The main responsibility of the Systems Architect is to provide expertise and support in the architecture design, architecture implementation and ongoing mission critical support of our Hosting environments delivering innovative learning technology services to a global market. Candidates should focus on design, documentation, deployment, and development of standardized solutions, including but not limited to SAN technologies, backup/restore process, system configuration and management duties. Also responding to and tracking escalated incidents and issues in a courteous, timely manner while maintaining the day-to-day operations of all internal/external production services.

Location: Kitchener, Ontario

Main Duties:

  • Performance and tuning analysis of both internal/external Windows Services
  • Configuration, management, and support of the following;
    • Print and file services
    • IIS 6.X or higher
    • Terminal Services
    • Microsoft Windows 2003, File, Web, and SQL Clusters
    • Microsoft Exchange Clusters
  • Involvement as a key senior resource on internal project teams for critical applications or escalated internal support.
  • Detailed involvement in the development/planning/execution of new IT Policies and infrastructure projects
  • Internal consulting with Product Development & Professional Services divisions on key projects
  • On-call rotation is a requirement of this role
  • Focus on core production services within the Desire2Learn Hosting Facilities and HQ Data Centre
  • Work to define and maintain technical architectures
  • Responsible for designing and maintaining multiple customer facing systems, as well as internal production and development systems
  • Provide daily operational management and support to the hosting environments to attain or exceed a 99.99% systems availability level
  • Performs analysis on business requirements and produces design specifications as required
  • Provide training and mentoring to IT team members
  • Ensure quality designs and implementations
  • Hands-on participation in the implementation and roll-out of systems
  • Assist with providing on-call support as needed

Work Experience Recommendations:

  • 5+ years of Windows Server management experience in an environment of 200+ Windows 2000/2003 servers and 300 – 600 users or more.
  • 3+ years experience managing Active Directory objects using GPO
  • 2+ Years experience SQL/Oracle administration experience
  • Experience managing Exchange Clusters
  • In-depth knowledge and experience using IIS 5/6.X (3+ years)
  • 1+ Years of VMWare ESX 3.X experience required
  • 1+ years of FC/ISCSI SAN management experience
  • 2+ years experience using ticket management systems such as (but not limited to) Remedy, or HEAT utilizing basic ITIL processes
  • 1+ years network administration experience in a multimedia network environment utilizing VOIP/Video, 802.11P, & 802.11Q (Layer 3 & 4 required, Layer 7 preferred)
  • Posses a holistic view of technologies, and use it effectively in design and implementation of services
  • Strong knowledge of systems architecture & data management
  • Technically oriented, confident, adaptable to change, demonstrated problem solving skills, abstract thinking, good verbal and written communication skills, team player and continuous learner
  • Ability to clearly document and communicate objectives, requirements, and designs to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Seasoned judgment to suggest approaches that optimize among customer needs, business constraints, and technological realities
  • Demonstrated ability to compare, contrast, and prioritize among alternative approaches to meet objectives while assessing risk both quantitatively and qualitatively
  • A Minimum of 3 years experience with VMWare ESX server, in a high availability environment
  • Familiar with Storage Area Network (SAN) technologies and their practical application in disk and tape solution design. This includes fiber channel as well as IP based solutions
  • SAN administration, replication, and backup/recovery software knowledge required. (ie. HP EVA 8100, IBM DS4300, Netbackup, DoubleTake, ZFS)
  • Familiar with the design, usage, and application of multiple security technologies (Layer 7 filtering, IDS/IPS, Layer 4 firewalls, IDM, NAC etc.)
  • 3+ years network administration experience in a multimedia network environment utilizing VOIP/Video, 802.11P, & 802.11Q (Layer 3 & 4 required, Layer 7 preferred)
  • 3+ Years experience SQL/Oracle administration experience

Education Recommendations:

  • Current VCP an asset
  • Current CCNA an asset
  • Technical diploma/degree in a related field required. (Comp. Sci., Networking Technologies, etc.)
  • Project Management Certification an asset
  • VMWare and/or SAN, training/certifications an asset
  • Current Checkpoint certification an asset
  • IBM/HP Server/Storage training or certification an Asset
  • Current Microsoft Certification recommended (MCSA/MCSE)
