São Paulo, Brazil and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, October 15, 2012
Desire2Learn Incorporated, the leader in providing cloud-based learning solutions for higher education, K-12 and Fortune 1000 companies, today announced its expansion into Latin America with the formation of D2L Brasil. The organization will service Latin America and has already announced its charter customers.
Earlier this month, Desire2Learn closed an $80 million strategic round of financing, in part to support global growth. The demand for technology-based learning solutions has never been greater—growing to more than $220 billion in 2017, up from nearly $74 billion last year1—and global growth is expected to account for much of that. In Brazil, for example, nearly 8.6 million students took online courses in 2010, according to studies from the Internet Steering Committee in Brazil (CGI.br), and the Brazilian Ministry of Education credits growth in higher education to the increasing availability of distance education and technology, which accounted for nearly 15 percent of higher education students in 2010.
In addition to its global headquarters in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, the Desire2Learn family of companies includes organizations in the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Singapore and now, Brazil. D2L Brasil will be based in São Paulo, from where it will serve all of Latin America.
"There truly never has been a greater global demand for learning and education, and we are excited to seize this opportunity with D2L Brasil," said Dennis Kavelman, Chief Operating Officer, Desire2Learn. "We have already seen significant adoption in the short time that we have been operating from São Paulo and see tremendous opportunity to bring our solutions to a large market."
The company also today announced its first customers in Brazil, which include the Hospital Albert Einstein in São Paulo; Laboratório de Engenharia de Software da PUC-RJ, a software engineering institution in Rio de Janeiro; Grupo Friedman, a retail training and consulting organization in Rio de Janeiro; as well as an initial partner SEMESP, the Association of Higher Education for the State of São Paulo, a consortium of universities.
