Contra Costa Community College District Implements Desire2Learn® Learning Suite as Single Platform for Three Distinct Colleges

With upwards of 60,000 students accessing the learning platform, Contra Costa selects Desire2Learn, citing the system's ease of use and capability to meet the needs of a diverse student population

Baltimore, MD, August 24, 2012

D2L Ltd. (“Desire2Learn”), a leader in providing innovative learning solutions today announced that Contra Costa Community College District (CCCCD), one of the largest multi-college community college districts in California, has selected Desire2Learn Learning Suite. Encompassing Contra Costa College, Diablo Valley College and Los Medanos College, the district will utilize Desire2Learn Learning Suite to serve a diverse student population of over 60,000 students annually.

CCCCD made the decision to evaluate a new learning management system in late spring of 2011, seeking a platform that would enable them to create a single, easy to use platform that all faculty and students would utilize. Having evaluated seven different providers, the 18-member task force including faculty and students from all three colleges, as well as staff and management, reached a near-unanimous decision that Desire2Learn would enable the District to best fulfill its vision for teaching and learning.

“One of the main reasons we selected Desire2Learn is the system’s clean user interface,” remarks Mojdeh Mehdizadeh, Vice Chancellor, Education and Technology, Contra Costa Community College District. “Students and especially faculty really liked the interface and just how easy it was to see the system’s various components. Faculty also felt that all of the functions and features associated with the quizzes tool were unmatched in any of the other systems.”

In deciding whether to have the learning platform on premise or through the Desire2Learn Cloud, CCCCD ultimately chose the Cloud model. Mehdizadeh remarks that “It was really nice to have that option and to know that over 90% of Desire2Learn’s clients are on the SaaS model.”

Currently implemented among the college district’s early adopters for the fall 2012 term, Contra Costa plans to fully implement the Desire2Learn solution by fall of 2013 and will eventually have an online component for every course offered at all three colleges.

Before making their selection, CCCCD received references from existing Desire2learn clients with similar geographic implementations as the District.

“The theme we heard during the reference check process, was how happy institutions are with their decision to implement Desire2Learn and also the high levels of satisfaction among their faculty members – that was huge for us,” says Mehdizadeh. “Our three distinct colleges serve vast and differing populations located 17 to 34 miles apart. To have the reassurance that there is one product – Desire2Learn – that could meet the needs of all of our students and enable faculty to engage more effectively with the LMS was instrumental.”

“We are excited to be working with Contra Costa Community College District to provide a single platform for all three of their colleges,” remarks John Baker, President, Desire2Learn. “Desire2Learn looks forward to working in partnership with Contra Costa to ensure that the district has the technology in place to take their teaching and learning programs to the next level.”
