Desire2Learn Incorporated (“Desire2Learn”), a leading provider of enterprise teaching and learning platforms, today announced that the University of Manitoba, the province’s largest public university, is migrating to Desire2Learn Learning Suite.
The University of Manitoba sought an eLearning solution that would be scalable for 30,000 student and faculty users at the university’s main campus in Fort Garry as well as the Health Sciences Centre in downtown Winnipeg. Desire2Learn Learning Environment will be utilized in 200 online courses and will supplement traditional classroom learning in approximately 1,800 courses across the university’s 90 different degree programs.
“We have a very active distance learning faculty and they are reliant on the learning management system for a variety of uses,” remarks Kevin Stewart, Project Coordinator, Office of Continuous Improvement, University of Manitoba. “We look forward to utilizing many of the features in Desire2Learn Learning Environment, especially the social media tools and Banner integration. We are really looking forward to designing competencies and curriculum mapping within the Learning Environment, especially for faculty who are planning to use this to track accreditation.”
During the selection process which also involved another proprietary offering as well as an open source alternative, the University of Manitoba cited hosting and system functionality as two of the key contributing factors in the selection. Using a formulaic evaluation process, Desire2Learn Learning Environment scored highest overall. Having made the decision to migrate to Desire2Learn Learning Environment in July 2011, the university is now planning an aggressive rollout for the system. With a small pilot currently in effect for select winter term courses, complete implementation is scheduled for the Fall 2012 term.
“We look forward to delivering a high-quality, innovative education experience for the University of Manitoba’s wide range of programs and faculties,” remarks Dennis Kavelman, Chief Operating Officer, Desire2Learn. “The university’s commitment to diverse degree programs provides students with endless potential to pursue their goals and secure their futures. It is our commitment that Desire2Learn will help transform learning experiences for students by providing an engaging and interactive environment.”
